Panthers Shut Out Giants

The Carolina Panthers dominated the N.Y. football Giants on Sunday afternoon at Bank of America Stadium. Cam Newton threw for three touchdown passes and ran for another, and the Panthers sacked Eli Manning seven times. The win marks the most lopsided victory in the history of the franchise. The win couldn't have come at a better time for a Panthers team that heads into a bye week with some major confidence after blowing late leads in their first two games of the year.

11.4 Million Pay Day

The hottest golfer on the planet over the latter part of the summer captured the FedEx Cup on Sunday afternoon at East Lake Golf club. Stenson became the first European to win the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup.

Who will be the signal caller Saturday?

Appalachian State (0-2) opens up Southern Conference play this Saturday as the team travels to Burlington for a matchup with the Elon Phoenix (1-2). Appalachian State lost its home opener to NC A&T 24-21 in its last outing. Meanwhile, Elon fell to the same team last week 23 to 10. Can Appalachian right the ship in what has been a tough season so far? A lot of that depends on the play they can get from the quarterback position. Who will start? Kam Bryant or Jamal Londry Jackson? That remains to be seen. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.

Tar Heels Poised to Challenge Yellow Jackets Saturday in Atlanta

The North Carolina Tar Heels (1-1) travel to Atlanta Saturday for a high noon kickoff against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The game stands as the ACC opener for the Heels. Carolina will look for its first win in Atlanta against the Yellow Jackets since 1997. The game will be televised on ESPN.

NFL Power Rankings after Week 1

1. Denver Broncos 7 TD passes by Peyton Manning led to an impressive win at home over the defending Super Bowl Champions Baltimore Ravens.

2. San Francisco 49ers 412 yards passing and 3 TD's for Colin Kaepernick led the 49ers to a hard-fought 34 to 28 win at  home over the Green Bay Packers. The losers of last year's Super Bowl, San Francisco, is off to a great start in 2013.

3. Seattle Seahawks Hard-fought 12 to 7 victory against the Carolina Panthers in week one. Traveled all the way to the East coast for a 1 p.m. kickoff and battled high heat and humidity along the way. Defense showed their muscle. Sunday night showdown with the 49ers this week!

4. Green Bay Packers Tough loss on the road to a very good 49ers team. Aaron Rodgers and company looked sharp. The Pack will be heavy contenders all year long.

5. New England Patriots Required a late field-goal to slide past a young and talented Bills team. The Patriots have a ways to go and Tom Brady needs some targets to throw the ball to. That being said, the Patriots are still in good form.

Color Analyst for High School Football on WLXN

This fall I am continuing to pursue my dream of becoming a sports broadcaster by working as a color analyst for High School football games in my hometown of Davidson County.  I am the newest member of the sports team at KOOL 1440 AM and 99.9 FM WLXN out of Lexington. Each week we cover a "game of the week" that involves High School football teams in Davidson County. Each week we air at 7 p.m. on Friday nights for our pre game show which leads the listener right up to kickoff. Then, after the game we have a post game show with interviews and wrap up discussions. I am cultivating my sports broadcasting skills by interviewing coaches, researching team and player information, preparing spotting charts, and learning how to deliver during the games on Friday night so to entertain and paint a picture for our audience. You can tune in down in the Lexington/Winston-Salem area on 99.9 FM or you can always listen on the world wide web at WLXN.com or use the tune in radio app on a smartphone device.

Panthers Predictions

Will the Panthers make the playoffs this year? That is the big question surrounding the start of the third season of the Cam Newton and Ron Rivera era. Failure to make the playoffs could jeopardize the coaching future for Ron Rivera in Charlotte. Meanwhile, for Newton, it is time for the number one overall pick in the 2011 draft to shine and deliver wins for this franchise in search of a return to the postseason. The schedule looks tough, in fact, the Panthers have the toughest schedule in the National Football league based off their opponents winning percentages from a year ago. I have the Panthers going into the bye week in week 4 at 1 and 2, with losses at home to Seattle and the N.Y. Giants. The Panthers will prove strong in their division I predict and go 4 and 2 in those games.. with two wins over Tampa Bay and wins at home against Atlanta and New Orleans. They will lose back-to-back weeks at the San Francisco 49ers and against the New England Patriots on Monday night football at Bank of America Stadium. In the end, I predict the Panthers to slide into the playoffs as a wild card in the NFC with a 9 and 7 record for the regular season.

Is it possible that the hottest name in golf right now may not be Woods, Mickelson, or Scott? Instead, it's the 37-year old Swede Henrik Stenson. Over the weekend, Stenson captured the 2nd leg of the PGA TOURs FedEx Cup Playoffs by winning the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston. Stenson fired a 63 on Saturday in round two and a couple of 66's on Sunday and Monday to capture his first PGA TOUR victory of the season by two shots over American Steve Stricker. The win didn't come as a surprise, however. Stenson finished runner-up in the British Open and a World Golf Championship event and he tied for third at the PGA Championship last month. The win caps off a great summer of golf for Stenson and sends him soaring to the top of the FedEx Cup standings with just two playoff events remaining.

Grizzles down the Apps

This past Saturday, two of college football's powerhouse programs at the Division 1- FCS level battled one last time on the gridiron at those ranks. The result was a 30 to 6 Montana victory in front of a sold out Washington-Grizzly stadium in Missoula. The Mountaineers failed to score an offensive touchdown and Montana pulled away in the 4th quarter with a couple of late touchdowns.
